MAXACE HERON - MIDNIGHT CAT DESIGN

Another great knife from the Midnight Cat Design team and Maxace, the Heron runs on Multi Row Bearings to make sure it's smooth as silk on opening.

Featuring a slim gentleman's profile and only weighing 144 grams it's sure to become an EDC favorite.

The slim 96mm S90V steel blade is long enough to get the heavier jobs done and closes with an Axis lock system.

Here's a few tips for buyers on adjusting the thumb studs and the pocket clip - although we figured these out in a few minutes. -

1. The knife comes with the standard thumb stud fitted and the Wave thumb stud included separately (along with a couple of spare springs for the Axis Lock).

2. A T6 hex bit fits the thumb stud screws. There are small grooves cut into the blade where the thumb stud pieces clip into. It's very simple to remove and replace the original thumb stud with the Wave thumb stud.

3. The pocket clip comes in an unusual spot - screwed to the spine with two T8 hex screws - which is not a very practical position for pocket carry.

However, the rear T8 hex screw that holds the end of the knife together can be removed and the pocket clip fitted with that screw to either the left or right side. Then simply replace the two spine screws to cover the holes.

The Wave feature on the knife works very well and we have tried it numerous times. It still allows easy manual flipping of the blade the same as the standard thumb stud.

Well made and excellent value.

The Heron is striking, very well made, and is excellent value. The materials are top-shelf, the build quality is similar to Tuya, and the design is good.

The Maxace Heron has a harpoon/dagger shaped blade, much like a Heron’s beak, that is far more stabby than slicey. It cuts well enough, but you won’t be buying (or using) this knife for fine slicing tasks. The thumb studs are a good size and are in the right spot. Don’t let the S90V get dull, or you will be sharpening for hours.

It is great to see Axis locks starting to appear on knives other than those made by Benchmade. The production and function of the Heron’s lock is at least as good as any of my Benchmades, but not as refined as Hogue’s ABLE lock. Axis lock knives have an excellent fidget factor. I am at the point of frame-lock flipper fatigue, and hope that this marks the beginning of quality knives with Axis locks from other companies.

The handle is very well milled, and the inlays are nicely fitted, but not as precise as we have come to expect from Reate and We Knife. The handle matches the style of the blade, but it is not particularly ergonomic. It is easy to put the pocket-clip on whichever side you prefer, and it doesn’t create any hot-spots for my medium sized hands.

I can recommend the Heron as a striking and well made knife, even though it is not the most comfortable or functional option out there. It is better made than most knives with an Axis lock, and better value than most knives with its materials.
